Julie Scott

Julie Scott’s love for athletics came naturally from her parents and two older brothers while growing up in Ashland, Kentucky.  She attended the University of Kentucky as a gymnast, where she ended up as a cheerleader for the 1978 NCAA champions, Kentucky Wildcats.

Post-college, Julie played professional golf, which brought her to live in Florida.  The local county would not permit pickleball to be played on their tennis courts.  Julie wrote a letter to the newspaper, which got published with a photo and in turn, resulted in the county constructing its first pickleball-specific facility.

Julie and her husband, Larry Scott, took up pickleball after watching their son, Kyle Yates, take up the sport and become the #1 ranked player in the world.  Julie and Larry volunteered and taught beginning pickleball (Pickleball 101) clinics at the local park in Fort Myers once a month for 6 years until Covid hit.  They became accomplished players themselves.  However, after winning “most all events” at 4.0, Julie and Larry moved up to 4.5 and lost most all events! Once moving back down to 4.0 and losing to those they used to beat, they decided to learn about refereeing the sport.  Now they are two of most well-known referees in the sport.

Julie and Larry have traveled many places to train referees.  In the past couple of years and scheduled for this year, they traveled to Ireland, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, St Thomas USVI, Rome Italy, England and Peru.

Julie currently serves as the USA Pickleball Certified Referee Coordinator for the Atlantic South region.  She has been and is currently the 2024 and 2025 APP Tour Referee Coordinator.  Julie was the Referee Coordinator for the 2025 US Open Pickleball Championships with over 125 referees.  Her referee highlights include the 2024 World Cup Pickleball Championships in Lima Peru, multiple USA Pickleball Nationals, and the 2024 Drew Brees Dream Foundation fundraiser.  Traveling to train referees with Larry makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

Julie is married to Larry Scott, a veterinarian, and they have six children together with so far six grandchildren.
